TMJ splints are designed to help relieve pain and pressure caused by temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). Although TMJ disorders can resolve on their own sometimes, we may recommend a splint to avoid further damage to your teeth and jaw, and also to alleviate associated pain and soreness.
book onlineSymptoms of TMD include:
- Muscle pain around the jaw joints (in front of your ears)
- Cracking, popping, or clicking sounds in your jaw
- Limited movement of the jaw
- Facial muscle spasms
- Headaches that begin in front of your ears
TMJ splints work by reducing the pressure on your jaw joints or by realigning your bite. We can accomplish this through a stabilization splint, also called a bite guard or bite plate. These splints are made from a hard acrylic resin, which fits comfortably over the upper or lower teeth.
The device effectively prevents the upper and lower sets of teeth from making contact and helps keep the bite in correct alignment overall. Generally, these splints are worn 24 hours per day, although depending on your individual condition, we may recommend a splint to be worn only at night instead.
